SIA seeking ‘interesting’ opportunity for Virgin stake

Singapore Airlines (SIA) is open to any “interesting” opportunity in terms of selling its stake in British airline Virgin Atlantic.

Virgin Atlantic made its intentions to merge the carrier with another airline clear approximately six months ago.

Richard Branson, 51 percent stakeholder in Virgin Atlantic, recently confirmed receiving interest from several parties regarding a possible merger, according to TODAYonline.

Vice-president of public affairs at SIA Nicholas Ionides said “at this point no decision has been made about an immediate divestment of our stake in Virgin.”

Malaysian low-cost carrier, AirAsia, were reportedly considering a bid for Virgin Atlantic, however AirAsia recently refuted these claims telling MediaCorp that it had no plans to acquire a stake in the carrier.

Regional transports and consumers analyst at RBS Asia Securities John Rachmat said that European and American airlines would be interested in Virgin as they will have a greater scope for operational integration.
