Lonely Planet, the world’s leading travel content provider, has created a Royal London Audio Walking Tour for the iPhone. To celebrate the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, this tour of the top regal spots in London is free to download from the iTunes store for a limited time.
Lonely Planet’s iPhone Audio Walking Tours bring together Lonely Planet’s trusted recommendations and audio productions from AudioGO, which includes material from the BBC Archives such as the engagement announcement of William and Kate.
The Royal London Audio Walking Tour follows the route that the newlyweds will take after the wedding ceremony, taking in 13 sights from Westminster Abbey to Buckingham Palace and including 10 Downing Street, Women of World War II Monument and St James’ Palace.
Following the tour’s recommended route, users will encounter reviews written by Lonely Planet’s expert authors, along with atmospheric audio commentary. The informative and inspiring apps provide detailed information to let people explore at their own pace, with an easy to navigate location aware map that allows the user to stop and start their journey or skip ahead to any of the selected stops. The tours also work offline, so roaming charges for international users can be avoided.
Lonely Planet’s VP Wireless Services, Jeremy Kreitler, said, “Our Audio Walking Tours are an exciting innovation which we hope, along with our iPhone City Guides and Phrasebooks, will help travellers to get the information they need at their fingertips. William and Kate’s wedding has created renewed interest in the Royal Family, so it’s the perfect time to release an app to some of London’s most iconic sights which are linked to the monarchy. The app will be free to download for a short time to enable visitors and Londoners alike to find out more about the destination of the moment.”
Mike Bowen, Managing Director for AudioGO, who produced the audio for the apps, added: “As our Audio Walking Tours venture with Lonely Planet goes from strength to strength, we are delighted to bring new and exciting concepts into the mix by creating ambient audio productions which will give the user a unique experience.”
This brand new app comes hot on the heels of five iconic walks in Central London, the first apps in Lonely Planet’s Audio Walking Tours series, which launched in February. They are available from the iTunes store and priced at NZD$5.99 each.
The apps are compatible with iOS4 and can be viewed on iPhone and iPod Touch. They can be downloaded from the iTunes App Store and further information is available at lonelyplanet.com/mobilewalk. Look out for tours of Paris, which are coming soon.
