US President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama arrived in the Republic of Ireland this month, marking the first arrival of a US President since 2004.

The leader and his wife took the time to trace his family ancestry in the country, stopping by old cathedrals as well as a helicopter ride to the small village of Moneygall, The Herald Sun reported.

President Obama addressed the village’s population of up to 350 people stating that, "my name is Barack Obama, of the Moneygall Obamas, and I’ve come home to find the apostrophe we lost somewhere along the way".

"We feel very much at home," he said with his wife standing beside him.

Despite the ash cloud forming from Iceland cutting the President’s six day trip down to only one day, the leader did not leave the country without “downing” a “full pint” of alcohol at a local pub.

Pub crowd told media that the President drank the alcohol in four slurps, even forming a foam mustache as he reached the end of the glass.

"The president actually killed his pint! He gets my vote," Irish government clerical worker Christy O’Sullivan said.

"He’s the first president I’ve actually seen drink the black stuff like he’s not ashamed of something."
