In preparation for her eighth birthday in January 2012, Cunard’s flagship, Queen Mary 2, will head to the Blohm & Voss Shipyard in Hamburg, Germany for a refit.

From 24 November to 7 December, she will be worked on by thousands, have almost ten football pitches of carpet replaced and will have 46 square kilometres of fabric made into more than 6,000 items onboard.

“With Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth we are fortunate to have two very young ships that provide a fabulous experience for our guests. In Queen Mary 2 we have something very special, the most famous ocean liner in the world and a ship that still turns heads everywhere she goes – she is unquestionably the pride of our fleet,” said Cunard Line president Peter Shanks via his blog where the news was first announced last week.

Carpets will be refreshed in the areas of decks two and three with completion of the refurbishment of flooring beneath the carpet scheduled as well.

Just in time for her maiden circumnavigation of Australia, a range of refurbishments have been planned by Tillberg Design AB, the Swedish company responsible for QM2’s original design.

Staterooms

Each of the 1,310 staterooms will be revamped with new carpets, curtains, bedding and linen with some receiving new soft furnishings.

A new design is also slated for the ‘Queen’s Grill Grand Duplex’, ‘Master’ and ‘Penthouse’ Suites.

“I have always recognised just how important it is to feel comfortable in your stateroom – a home away from home,” Mr Shanks wrote in his blog.

Golden Lion Pub

The popular and very busy pub will undergo a complete redesign and refurbishment and will also feature new television screens.

The revamped venue will recreate the best of British pubs along with the feel of an American country club.

Canyon Ranch SpaClub

The teak surrounding the hydrotherapy pool will be refurbished along with a general upgrade of all facilities.

New exercise machines will be installed in the fitness centre, along with additional features to the Beauty Salon.

Commodore Club

Whilst there aren’t any major changes for this popular bar, it will see new carpet and additions to the white leather furniture.

Children’s Club

A little known area onboard, the Children’s Club will be refurbished with new soft play areas and will feature the latest in electronic gaming and entertainment.

Sir Samuel’s

This busy bar that is popular for its specialty coffees during the day and wine at night will now feature new carpet and furniture coverings.

Queen’s Grill and Princess Grill Restaurants

A lighter carpet design will be added to these fine dining venues.

Veuve Clicquot Champagne Bar

This exclusive bar will feature new carpet and soft furnishings design.

New onboard experiences are also expected to be implemented once QM2 returns to service in December with details yet to be disclosed.
