Romania is betting on family ties between Dracula and the British royal family to attract more UK visitors to the country.

At a recent London tourism trade fair, the European country’s tourist office gained local interest after promoting links between the current British royals and the fifteenth century Prince of Wallachia, Vlad III, who earned the title, Vlad the Impaler, thanks to his fondness of spiking his victims on metal stakes, the Daily Mail reported.

The relationship between the two royals was confirmed in a 2011 documentary, where Prince Charles made reference to his ancestral links to Vlad.

“The genealogy shows I am descended from Vlad the Impaler, so I do have a bit of a stake in the country,” the Prince said.

It is alleged that Queen Mary was related to the slayer, however, what is certain is George V’s cousin, Marie, married the prince of Romania.

According to the tourist bureau, the country has already had an increase in Britons travelling to Romania, with a seven percent rise during the first three months of this year compared to the same period last year.

Vlad the Impaler was also the inspiration behind Bram Stokers’ ‘Dracula’ because of his fondness of eating bread dipped into his victim’s blood.
