Paris For Lunch: Les Orchidées at Park Hyatt Paris-Vendôme

Les Orchidées restaurant at Park Hyatt Paris-Vendôme

The French certainly know how to live well, and as any visitor to Park Hyatt Paris-Vendôme's esteemed restaurant, Les Orchidées, can attest, they know how to eat well, too…but we knew that already from a previous visit to this most remarkable of Parisian hotels where computer geek billionaires compete for accommodation with captains of industry, high-ranking government officials, glamorous film stars, and other ordinary people of the world.  They come for the bulletproof gates that drop down to block the back entrance from the paparazzi, but they stay for the food.

In the land of blocks-long farmers' markets purveying everything from quail to snail by way of cheese, fruit, meat, vegetables, herbs, spices, and desserts that bring tears to the eyes of any dieter, it comes as no surprise that the menu at Les Orchidées (see sample in .pdf here) is an adventure in fine dining in Paris without the haughty ambience of more formal establishments commonly associated with the city.  In contrast, Park Hyatt Paris-Vendôme, the only contemporary-style hotel in the city to have earned the much coveted status of 'palace hotel' as officially designated by the French government, is a bastion of casual sophistication both in its beautiful rooms and suites and in its public areas, including its restaurants.  For people who have no need to impress anyone other than themselves, the hotel and its various venues for wining and dining are among the most desirable destinations for the city's cognoscenti.  While the hotel's name indicates its proximity to the boutiques of the world's most famous names in jewellery, Park Hyatt Paris-Vendôme is only a short walk to Place de la Madeleine and its many celebrated names in French food such as Fauchon, Hédiard, Mariage Frères, and Maille.  Yes, there is an entire shop that sells mustard and only mustard in all its forms.

Les Orchidées is the domain of chef Jean-François Rouquette, who continues to raise the bar on haute cuisine à la moderne with his innovative flavour combinations created with the freshest of ingredients, some local, some coming from as far away as Tasmania.  Wherever it may originate, only the best will do in Jean-François' kitchen.  This matches nicely the ethos of Park Hyatt Paris-Vendôme's guests, for whom only the best will do.
