2,400 cruise passengers have injected more than a million dollars indirectly and half a million directly into Newcastle and the Hunter region's economy last week, with the Radiance of the Seas docking in Newcastle.
As a result, Newcastle and Hunter businesses have begun lobbying for more cruise ships to visit Newcastle with more than 22,000 cruise passengers people having already been dropped off this season, in a report in the Newcastle Herald.
Tourism Hunter chairman Will Creedon said 500 passengers had pre-booked tours across the region before arriving and about 150 passengers took the Newcastle highlights tour, including visiting Blackbutt Reserve, the museum and Fort Scratchley.
Mr Creedon added that the passengers were providing Hunter enterprises with return business, with comments including passengers saying, “goodness, we have driven through Newcastle many times and never thought of staying”.
