UNESCO and the UNWTO have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) as a framework for cooperation in developing sustainable tourism programmes and other initiatives.
The MoU will assist the two organisations in implementing the UNESCO World Heritage and Sustainable Tourism Programme and other transnational tourism ventures.
The agreement aims to promote and safeguard the legacy of the Silk Roads Heritage Corridors, United Nations Steering Committee on Tourism for Development and the Global Partnership for Sustainable Tourism.
“I look forward to furthering this partnership on the basis of shared values and common objectives,” UNESCO director-general Irina Bokova said.
The MoU is the third agreement between UNESCO and the UNWTO, the first dating back to 1979.
