Instant purchase fares give agents access to exceptionally competitive point-to-point rates but until now they could only be booked a maximum of 90 days prior to a Trenitalia train's departure.
Rail Plus General Manager Sales & Marketing Greg McCallum says the extension is a welcome development for travel agents because it means all elements of a European itinerary can now be wrapped up simultaneously.
"Until now agents have regularly had to lock in accommodation and airfares, but sit on the rail component until they entered the 90-day booking period," says McCallum. "Now an Italian rail journey is far less likely to hold up the process."
McCallum warned agents, however, that they would need to make full use of the 120 day window or risk missing out on the cheapest instant purchase fares.
"As with any yield management system there are only a limited number of cheaper instant purchase seats available for each journey and these are available to agents in almost every market outside of Europe.
"That makes it vital that Australian consultants get in early to secure the best prices."
Italy is one of the most popular destinations for Australasian travellers and the introduction of instant purchase fares has dramatically cut prices across the Trenitalia network.
