With Christmas coming this week, those thinking of making a last minute booking for an overseas jaunt should consider taking their trip in January.

Consulting three years of data, leading global travel search engine Skyscanner found that airfares in week 52 – the last week of the year – skyrocket almost 50% above the average airline ticket price but then drop dramatically come January.

Airfares to destinations such as Singapore, Malaysia and India rise almost 50% above the average ticket cost, falling to as low as 20% below average in January. Flights to the UK rise to almost 20% above average ticket cost during the last week of December, falling to approximately 25% below average in January.

Destinations favourited by savvy Australian travellers this summer holidays include the US (approx. 20% fare decrease in January historically), Thailand (10% fare decrease), UK (20% fare decrease), Ireland (25% fare decrease), and Japan (20% fare decrease).

Commenting on the findings, Skyscanner’s Head of Marketing Australia and New Zealand, Alana Saphin said, ‘while some of us have no choice but to travel to see family and friends during the Christmas break, those with a little more flexibility should consider postponing that holiday a week or two later and go in January. Not only will saving money bring a smile to your face but so will knowing that everyone else is back to work while you’re still on holiday.’
