Sudima Hotels announces new 4.5-star hotel, Sudima Kaikōura
The New Zealand leader in sustainable and socially responsible accommodation is giving a major boost to a destination regenerating after a natural disaster. Sudima Hotels has received the go-ahead to build a new, purpose-built 4.5-star hotel in Kaikōura, designed for domestic and international leisure travellers and offering 118 rooms, a restaurant and bar, conference facilities and a gym and pool. The hotel is scheduled to open during the summer of 2019/20.
Sudima Kaikōura will be ideally located on the shoreline of the Kaikōura township, with an exceptional outlook to the mountains and sea and within walking distance of Kaikōura’s variety of offerings. The town has long been a major destination for domestic and international tourists, and following a 13-month, post-earthquake repair project to restore the damaged part of State Highway 1, tourism spending and visitor numbers are rising once again.
Sudesh Jhunjhnuwala, the CEO of Sudima Hotels, says, “We’re very pleased to be able to announce the new hotel at this time, and to be playing a role in the recovery of Kaikōura following the earthquake that badly affected the town and its economy. Sudima Hotels will bring a growing national brand and distinctive product offer to Kaikōura as it continues to rebuild and develop.
“We intend Sudima Kaikōura to help attract visitors and increase the average rate in the local accommodation sector, all of which will help in the recovery of the local economy. This is the type of development that will attract other tourism investment and development. And importantly for us, the addition of a Kaikōura hotel will strengthen Sudima Hotels national portfolio, especially in the South Island, where we have an existing successful Christchurch Airport hotel and a second in construction in Christchurch’s city centre.”
Befitting Kaikōura’s reputation as one of New Zealand’s landmarks of natural beauty, Sudima Kaikōura will join the rest of the Sudima hotel group in taking a responsible, forward-thinking approach to sustainability and accessibility. The hotel will open as a single use plastic free facility, consistent with the company’s goal to be single use plastic free across its entire portfolio by 2020, and Sudima Hotels will work with its long-time partner, the social change organisation Be Accessible, to design the hotel to Gold or Platinum accessibility status. Sudima Hotels was the first accessible hotel group in New Zealand, and all Sudima Hotels properties have accessibility ratings of between Bronze and Gold.
The General Manager of Destination Kaikōura, Glenn Ormsby, says, “We’re thrilled to welcome Sudima Hotels to Kaikōura. We look forward to working with them to promote Kaikōura as a great place to visit and stay. Having another 118 rooms in the district will help attract new types of visitors to the area, and Kaikōura has a lot of potential to attract more visitors due to changes in the landscape and the new product coming online shortly.
“In particular, there are conference, biking, science/education and hiking activities that will complement our existing marine tourism offering. After a challenging 18 months, it’s exciting to report new growth opportunities. The reach, influence and additional profile from having a hotel chain like Sudima Hotels located in Kaikōura cannot be underestimated.”
Kaikōura Mayor Winston Gray is excited that the development will proceed, “There has been talk about a new hotel in Kaikōura, and the investment and opportunities it would bring, for many years. Seeing this talk come to fruition is really special for me. I believe this development will be an absolute game changer for our community. The employment opportunities with a hotel of this scale are great. It will also add another quality venue for locals and visitors for events or conferences.
“Since the earthquake we’ve had a lot of disruption, including a few times where accommodation in town was completely sold out. This project sends a positive signal to locals, visitors and investors that Kaikōura is on a path to becoming better than ever. It will give confidence to other investors that Kaikōura is really on the move and I’m really looking forward to the development getting underway.”
Sudima Kaikōura will join Sudima Hotels nationwide portfolio of existing properties at Auckland Airport, Hamilton, Lake Rotorua, Christchurch Airport and a new Christchurch City hotel which is due to open in summer 2019.
Before the hotel opens, Sudima Hotels will have unveiled a comprehensive rebrand across its properties. The new brand will reposition Sudima Hotels in the market with a modern, contemporary and guest centric identity; details of the rebrand will be announced later this year.
