Where did the Millennial’s come from?

Trends emerging in the UK show Millenials are the surprise packet for agents

“You may not want to admit it, but if you were born between the early 1980’s to the mid-1990’s, you, my friend, are a millennial.”

It puts millennial’s  between say 23 to 35.  The digital native, born with high expectations, a sense of privilege, a worry free attitude about the world.

Due to their digital native status, they make prime candidates in travel to be self bookers.  So why are they the surprise new customer for travel agents?

A cool part of the creation of STUBA (merger of roomsXML to UK’s getabed) is that I get to access some very Euro centric brains in the form of Matt Stuart, once getabed CEO, now Stuba CCO (contracting manager).  Together we came up with 3 main considerations.

They know data, but don’t always trust it

Matt says “Review sites are viewed sceptically due to high profile cases where people voted a bus stop as the top tourist attraction in major town in South west UK. The joke went viral, the bus stop got the votes. It highlighted the potential to inflate Trip Advisor reviews, with many deciding agents were the source of truth.”

Houses, Latte’s and Avocados

The common refrain is that houses are not affordable or accessible for so many.  Whilst some strive, some simply have accepted they will never be wealthy “land owners” and are spending the cash.

Travel is so cheap; in 1994 it cost me $1600 to get to London on KLM with a median house price in Melbourne of $145,000.  2018? A shade over $900,000 and  Qantas, with no deals, have it today at approx. $2,800. Comparing apples to apples, the airfares are about a third of what they were.

Life is busy…

Millenials are busy.  Busy is the new black. Life is full on.  Travel takes longer, there’s more to do, so and be engaged in.  Population explosions see’s longer commutes  on busy roads where ride sharing means you may not need a car.

A quick email to an agent you have never met, build some trust and “boom” ,  it’s all done….

Why wouldn’t you?
