Chern’ee shares her culture through her art
ETB Travel News Ambassador and Contemporary Indigenous artist Chern’ee Sutton loves to share her peoples history and stories through her art, this week read the story of “Kurityityin” – The Magpie Lark.
My name is Chern’ee Sutton and I am a contemporary Indigenous artist from the Kalkadoon people from the Mount Isa area in Queensland. This painting is my interpretation of kurityityin which means The Magpie Lark in the Kalkadoon language.
This story is as old as time itself and is a creation story from the beginning of time. Long, long ago Kurityityin flew to the top of a hill and started to kick up the red dust over and over again calling to all the animals to rise up out of the ground and go forth and eat the grass and leaves and to live life on the land.
All the animals rose and emerged from the ground to start life.
