Those old enough to remember “Up Pompeii”, the late 60’s British television comedy series, when you hear the word Pompeii, may think of the irrepressible comedian star of “Up Pompeii”, Frankie Howerd.
With Frankie Howerd and his humour having long departed this earth, on a more serious yet pleasurable note, archaeological tour specialist Peter Sommer Travels has announced a cruise programme to explore Italy’s stunning Amalfi Coast and the Bay of Naples, with the opportunity to explore Pompeii’s famous ruins first hand, and perhaps give a moment’s thought to Frankie Howerd.
With the treasures of Pompeii now on show at the British Museum in London and well worth a visit if you are in London, the Amalfi and Pompeii cruise will escorted by author and archaeologist Dr Michael Metcalfe and art historian Francesca del Vecchio and the eight-day tour titled “Cruising the Amalfi Coast”, includes travelling aboard a traditional gullet wooden yacht.
Three departures have been scheduled this northern summer, coinciding with the British Museum’s blockbuster exhibition, Life and Death in Pompeii and Herculaneum, on show until September 29, with the tour also visiting other world famous locations, including Capri, Ischia, Positano, as well as less well known historic sites, ancient underwater city at Baia and the Roman frescoes of the Villa Oplontis.
The tour departs from Naples on 8 June, 7 September and 14 September 2013.
