Carrier: TAME

Flight Number: EQ551 dep JFK @ 10:00 Duration: 6h

Class: Business/Economy

Aircraft: Airbus A330

Check-in experience

Though the number of people waiting to check in at JFK looked daunting, the queue moved very quickly thanks to the seven positions open. Service was friendly, efficient, and attentive. Terminal 1 at JFK was as quiet as a library at this time of day, so passing through Security was quick and easy. At the gate, the staff were also noticeably affable and accommodating.

On-time performance

The flight departed New York 1h45m late due to the delayed arrival of the incoming aircraft because of inclement weather in the New York area. The flight therefore arrived at Quito’s very modern Mariscal Sucre International Airport 1h45m behind schedule.

Seat/Cabin conditions

TAME‘s Airbus 330 aircraft has a nice Business Class cabin with comfortable seats and enormous seat pitch. The 27 seats are arranged in 7 rows in a 2-3-2 configuration; the first row is 2-2-2. The rows are slightly staggered, a layout which gives the cabin an even greater feeling of spaciousness.

Food And Beverage

TAME (pronounced TAH-may) does not sell its Business Class seats as Business Class; the service is the same as in Economy and the airline considers it therefore to be a premium economy experience. The complimentary lunch was served with two options for the main course, following very appropriately with Andes Mints. The affable flight attendants were visible throughout the flight seeing to it that passengers were taken care of.

The entertainment system provides several film and music channels for the duration of the flight.

Quito’s dramatic mountain scenery seen out the windows welcomes visitors even before arrival. There was no wait at Immigration and bags were delivered in a timely manner.

TAME, the national airline of Ecuador, recently brought back its nonstop flights from New York to Quito, making it possible for residents of and visitors to the Big Apple to take an easy trip to South America. TAME was recognised at the World Airport Awards as a four-star airline and Quito’s Mariscal Sucre International Airport was awarded Best Regional Airport in South America for the second year in a row. With an airport transfer on arrival provided by the very reliable and friendly VIP Expeditions Ecuador as arranged through the remarkable Judy at Latin America Reservation Center in Florida, the arrival process was a breeze.

  1. Hi Robert, I have just started a new job that has me flying between New York and Quito every few weeks. The four flights I have taken so far have not shown Business / Premium Economy as an option when booking, even with 6 weeks notice. How did you book this class of travel? Thanks in advance. Pat
